There are many situations where it is natural, convenient or necessary
to explore infinite groups via their finite-dimensional representations or their actions on finite objects. How much understanding can one gain about an infinite group in this way? Sometimes little, sometimes a lot.
Do there exist algorithms that decide what the finite images of a group are?
Which groups are completely determined by their finite images?
I shall sketch some of the rich history of these problems and explain how input from geometry and low-dimensional topology has transformed the subject in recent years.

Sobre el conferenciante. Martin Bridson es Whitehead Professor en Oxford, y director del Clay Institute. Bridson es una de las figuras más prominentes en teoría de grupos y topología de dimensión baja, destacando especialmente por sus contribuciones sobre propiedades geométricas y algorítmicas de grupos.
Obtuvo su doctorado en 1991 en Cornell. Antes de establecerse en Oxford, fue profesor en Princeton, Ginebra e Imperial. Bridson ha recibido varios premios destacados, como el premio Whitehead Prize de la LMS (1999) y el Wolfson Prize de la Royal Society. Fue conferenciante invitado del ICM en 2006, y es Fellow de la AMS desde 2016.
